The Great Mathematical Tug-of-War: What on Earth is $0^0$?

To a child learning arithmetic, exponents are friendly. You take a base number, multiply it by itself a certain number of times, and watch it grow (or shrink). $2^3$ is $2 times 2 times 2 = 8$. $5^1$ is just $5$.

But eventually, curious minds stumble upon a mathematical trapdoor that has baffled students, computer programmers, and even legendary mathematicians for centuries: $0^0$ (zero to the power of zero).
