Hailo-8 vs. Hailo-8L: Choosing the Right Edge AI Accelerator for Your Project
The explosion of edge AI has transformed how we build smart cameras, home automation servers, industrial automation systems, and compact single-board computer setups (like the Raspberry Pi 5). Rather than relying on power-hungry desktop GPUs or sluggish CPU processing, developers are turning to dedicated neural processing units (NPUs).
Among the most popular modular options on the market are Hailo’s high-efficiency accelerators. But when looking at their lineup, two names frequently cause decision paralysis: Hailo-8 and Hailo-8L.
While they look similar and share the same core architecture, they cater to very different performance and budgetary sweet spots. Let’s break down how they stack up, where they differ, and which one belongs in your next build.
The Core Difference: Under the Hood
Structurally, the Hailo-8L is effectively the lighter, leaner sibling of the flagship Hailo-8.
Both processors are built on the same underlying dataflow architecture, meaning they share the same software toolchain, support the same neural network frameworks, and run models with identical data types (primarily INT8 arithmetic). However, the Hailo-8L has half the compute elements of the standard Hailo-8.
