From Cotton Fields to Medieval Realms: The Inspiring Journey of Author Wayne Grant

When readers dive into historical fiction, they look to be transported—not just to a different century, but into the minds, hearts, and struggles of unforgettable characters. Few modern authors achieve this quite like Wayne Grant, best known for his gripping Saga of Roland Inness.

Behind the meticulously researched battles, sweeping medieval landscapes, and tales of honor is an author whose own life journey was built on hard work, a love for storytelling, and an unexpected career path.

Roots in Rural Louisiana

Long before he was writing best-selling historical adventures, Wayne Grant grew up in a tiny cotton-farming town in rural Louisiana. Life there was defined by the rhythms of agriculture, hunting, fishing, and outdoor work. Between chopping cotton, dove hunting, and playing Little League baseball, a young Grant found refuge in classic adventure stories like Call It Courage and Kidnapped. These early reads planted a seed that would blossom decades later.

A Diverse Professional Background

Grant’s path to becoming a novelist wasn’t a straight line. Before he ever published a book, he served for four years as a senior official in the Pentagon, playing a part in helping rebuild the U.S. Army during a crucial post-Vietnam era of transition.

Despite the high-stakes world of defense and government policy, Grant never lost his childhood fascination with heroic tales and rich history.

The Birth of Roland Inness

The transition from defense official to published author happened organically. When Grant had two sons of his own, he began inventing bedtime stories for them, centering around a young boy and his longbow.

Those fatherly storytelling sessions grew far beyond bedtime. They formed the foundation of Grant’s debut 2014 novel, Longbow. The book follows Roland Inness, captivating readers with its blend of historical authenticity, fast-paced action, and deep-rooted themes of morality and resilience.

What started as a private family tradition turned into a massive literary success. Grant expanded Roland’s journey into a multi-book epic, The Saga of Roland Inness, which includes titles like:

  • Warbow
  • The Broken Realm
  • The Ransomed Crown
  • A Prince of Wales
  • Declan O’Duinne
  • A Question of Honour

Expanding the Legacy

Not content to stop with Roland Inness, Grant launched The Inness Legacy series—featuring works like No King, No Country and The Long Rifles—which tracks characters through tumultuous periods like the English Civil War and onward to the New World.
