Beyond the Classroom: The Truth About Dr. Vikas Divyakirti and His Civil Services Journey

Mention the words “UPSC Civil Services Examination” in India, and one name almost invariably enters the conversation: Dr. Vikas Divyakirti. For millions of aspirants striving to crack what is widely regarded as one of the world’s toughest exams, he is more than just an educator—he is a mentor, a philosopher, and a cultural icon.

Because of his deep expertise, authoritative command over subjects like Hindi literature and philosophy, and his role in shaping thousands of bureaucrats, a common question often arises: Is Vikas Divyakirti an IAS officer?

The short answer is: No, he is not currently an IAS officer. However, the story of how he did clear the civil services exam, why he chose to walk away from a prestigious government career, and how he ultimately built an educational empire is a fascinating tale of purpose over prestige.

The Man Who Cracked the Code on Attempt One

Born in December 1973 in Bhiwani, Haryana, Dr. Vikas Divyakirti pursued an exceptionally rigorous academic path. He earned multiple degrees from the prestigious University of Delhi—including a Bachelor of Commerce, a Bachelor of Arts in History, a Bachelor of Laws (LLB), alongside an M.Phil and a Ph.D. in Hindi Literature.

Equipped with this vast reservoir of knowledge, Divyakirti appeared for the UPSC Civil Services Examination in 1996. In a feat that most aspirants only dream of, he cleared the exam on his very first attempt, securing an All India Rank (AIR) of 384.

Following his success, he joined the Central Secretariat Service (CSS) of the Government of India. His official posting placed him as a section officer in the Department of Official Language under the Ministry of Home Affairs in New Delhi. Technically, he was a gazetted Group ‘A’ central government officer—though he belonged to the Central Secretariat Service rather than the elite Indian Administrative Service (IAS) cadre itself.

Why Did He Resign?

For most people, clearing UPSC and securing a central government position is the ultimate career pinnacle. Yet, after serving for a brief period (roughly a few months to a year), Dr. Divyakirti made a shocking decision: he resigned.

Why would someone walk away from a secure, high-status government job that millions spend years chasing?

According to various accounts of his journey, Divyakirti realized that while a bureaucratic career offered individual power and stability, his true calling lay elsewhere. He felt constrained by the slow pace of administrative machinery and red tape. Crucially, he discovered a profound passion for teaching and mentoring. He reasoned that instead of impacting policy in a single department, he could multiply his societal impact exponentially by guiding thousands of brilliant minds to become ethical, capable civil servants.

The Birth of Drishti IAS and Cultural Stardom

Leaving government service behind, Dr. Divyakirti returned to his academic roots. In 1999, he founded Drishti IAS in Mukherjee Nagar, Delhi—a small classroom that would eventually grow into a powerhouse institution for civil services preparation.

Over the decades, Drishti IAS expanded its footprint across physical centers and digital platforms, particularly championing aspirants from Hindi-medium backgrounds who historically faced structural disadvantages in the exam.

Dr. Divyakirti’s reach exploded with the digital age. His YouTube lectures, which seamlessly blend rigorous syllabus topics with deep philosophical insights, ethics, poetry, and social commentary, have amassed millions of loyal followers. His unique ability to make complex sociopolitical issues accessible turned him into an internet phenomenon.
